S&S Yawl Avanti

S&S Yawl Avanti

Avanti | Pieter vd Aa

After building the NY32 Pieter van der Aa was ready for his next project; Recreating Avanti, S&S Design #85. She was originally built in 1935 for Walter Rothschild who opted for the best of the best; design by Olin Stephens and built at the Herreshoff yard. Olin’s Stormy Weather has taken the world by storm and Mr. Rothschild’s design brief was to develop a slightly larger yawl, 40ft waterline, 56ft overall. She won her share of silver but in 1938 she sadly was lost in a hurricane. Avanti had a wonderful combination of comfort and speed; a spacious owners stateroom and large saloon built in a hull shape with serious ability to win the ocean races of her time. Pieter build her singlehanded in his yard. Her hull is strip plank, all other construction is as was in 1935. Like his earlier NY32, original panelweight and scantlings are respected and again this project has the blessing of the S&S office in New York. Touchwood proudly supplied the quarter sawn Western Red Cedar for the planking. Very lovely tight grain cedar, harvested at Haida Gwaii. You can follow the project at: www.pietervanderaa.nl
