Sourcing the timber for schooner Atlantic’s recreation
The schooner that set the record which stood in the history of sport, any sport ! In 1905 she crossed the Atlantic in 12 days, 4 hours and 36 minutes, a record that would stand for a hundred years.
The original Atlantic was broken up in 1983 but in 2009 Dutch yachtsman Ed Kastelein decided to recreate her. A man of great accomplishments, a man who built large schooners such as Zacca and Eleonora and who had the vision to turn dreams in to reality. With a team of hand picked craftsman he set out to build her and succeeded with flying colors. In the past decade she has circumnavigated the world and has been guest of honor at many classic yacht events.
Touchwood’s John Lammerts van Bueren was lucky to be involved in the project from the first ideas to her launch, her maiden trip and journeys in the following years. Touchwood helped source the mahogany for the interior, teak for the decks and of course the Sitka spruce for her spars came from our mill.
