Cambria, equipped with the world’s tallest Sitka spruce mast
Designed and built in 1928 by William Fife III in 1928, Cambria is often referred to as the world’s most beautiful yacht. In 2005 we were honored with our first Cambria project, supplying the Sitka spruce for the world’s tallest spruce mast. The knowhow and skills of the spar builders of the 30s were researched and a dedicated team built an extraordinary mast, beautiful, functional and strong, one that has and will continue to stand the test of time. Few realize the scale of a the project but knowing it took 5000 hours to build this mast ought to give an idea what it takes to build such a huge masterpiece.
The next project for Touchwood was the hull refit for which we sourced mahogany and teak for her backbone and planking. The dimensioned needed were staggering, the specifications seemed pretty much impossible. But luckily we had two years to find what was needed.
The project was carried out at Southampton Yacht Services under the watchful eye and management of her captain Chris Barkham with Dave Hambly and a team of amazing craftsman by his side. The project was about preserving the yacht, preserving her originality and saving all materials which could be saved. Cambria remains among the most original big sailing yachts of the world and it is such a privilege for us to be invited on board.
